Editorial

This year, the Henry James Review inaugurates the Leon Edel Prize essay. The journal had, at one time, given awards to work by new James scholars under the auspices of the James-Conrad Prize essays. What was important about that contest, which ceased some years back, was that it recognized and rewarded the work of beginning scholars. This was the intent behind the establishment of the Edel Prize: to be eligible, essays must be the work of scholars who have not held a full-time academic appointment for more than four years. While helping new Jamesians at the start of their careers, the contest also allows HJR to continue to broaden our base of contributors and readers and to remain a journal that is open to all of the best work on James.

The response to the Edel Prize announcement this year was excellent: some forty submissions drawn from an international group of young critics writing, quite diversely, on James. From this group, the Prize Committee, consisting of Richard A. Hocks, Leland S. Person, and myself, chose Stuart Burrows's "The Golden Fruit: Innocence and Imperialism in The Golden Bowl" as the prize-winning essay. While only one article could be selected as the prize essay, several other fine submissions will be published in HJR over the next year.

Congratulations to Stuart Burrows, along with heartfelt thanks to Dick Hocks and Lee Person.--SMG

We invite submissions for next year's prize.

The Leon Edel Prize is awarded annually for the best essay on Henry James by a beginning scholar. The prize carries with it an award of $150, and the prize-winning essay will be published in HJR. The competition is open to applicants who have not held a full-time academic appointment for more than four years. Independent scholars and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Essays should be 20-30 pages (including notes), original, and not under submission elsewhere or previously published. Please follow regular HJR guidelines as to format and identify essays as submissions for the Leon Edel Prize. A brief curriculum vitae should be included. Deadline: November 1, 2000.
