Carol Barrett holds doctorates in both clinical psychology and creative writing. She works with doctoral students in women's studies, literature, and religious studies through The Union Institute in Cincinnati. Barrett received a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. The poems in this issue are from her dissertation, "The Unauthorized Book of Esther: New Poems & Commentary on Revisionist Biblical Literature."

Susie Lan Cassel is an assistant professor in the literature and writing studies department and coordinator of the ethnic studies program at California State University in San Marcos. She is the editor of the forthcoming From Gold Mountain to the New Millennium: Chinese American Studies to the 21st Century (Critical Perspective in Asian Pacific American Series, Alta Mira Press, 2001) and a critical edition of the Ah Quin Diaries. Her work has appeared in MILUS, JAAS, Reflections, and the MLA's Profession.

Ana María Juárez received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Stanford University in 1996. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Her research and teaching focuses on issues of race, gender, and sexuality in Latin America and among Latinas/os in the United States. She is working on several other publications based on her ethnographic fieldwork with Caste War Maya in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, and she has recently begun collaborative research on sexuality within Latina/o families and communities.

Carmen R. Lugo-Lugo earned a B.A. in sociology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus, in 1993. She also holds an M.A. in sociology from Washington State University, where she is working on her Ph.D. in American Studies. Her dissertation will explore feminist literature in Puerto Rico. B. V. Olguín is an assistant professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and specializes in Latin American, United States Latina/o, and American literary and cultural studies. He has published articles in all of these fields, and his book La Pinta: History, Culture, and Ideology in Chicana and Chicano Convict Discourses is forthcoming from the University of Texas Press in 2001.

Evelyn Newman Phillips teaches anthropology and social work at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut. As an activist and applied anthropologist, her research interests include determining how African Americans resist whiteness and create a sense of community. She received her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Roberta Rubenstein is professor of literature at American University, where she teaches courses in fiction by women, feminist theory, and modernism. She has published more than thirty articles on modern and contemporary women writers, including Virginia Woolf, Doris Lessing, Toni Morrison, Margaret Atwood, Margaret Drabble, and Barbara Kingsolver. She is the author of The Novelistic Vision of Doris Lessing: Breaking the Forms of Consciousness (1979) and Boundaries of the Self: Gender, Culture, Fiction (1987). A new book, Home Matters: Longing and Belonging, Nostalgia and Mourning in Women's Fiction, is forthcoming from St. Martin's Press (2001). The essay published here was honored with the 1999 Florence Howe Award for Feminist Scholarship by the Women's Caucus of the Modern Language Association.

Georganne Scheiner received a Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University, where she teaches introduction to women's studies, feminist theory, and women and the body. She has completed a manuscript titled Our Movie Made Girls: Film Representations and Fans 1920-1950, which looks at both representations of adolescent girls in film and at adolescent girls as fans.

Susan S. Stocker was recently promoted to associate professor at Goucher College, where she teaches in the Department of Philosophy and Religion. She also leads theater workshops based on the work of Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed, which enable participants to practice their own concrete moral agency.

Lisa Udel is a doctoral candidate in the Department of English and Comparative Literatures at the University of Cincinnati. Her dissertation, "The Literature and Politics of Native Women's Activism, 1960-Present," won a fellowship from the American Association of University Women...
