Women, the Public Sphere, and the Persistence of Salons

Did French salon culture cease to exist prior to the Revolution, or did salons persist as important institutions well into the nineteenth century? On the one hand, feminist scholars and historians of the Old Regime have constructed an elaborate account of the centrality of salon sociability in the cultural practices of the eighteenth century that nevertheless implies that salon culture disappeared along with the gendering of the public sphere in the decades leading up to the French Revolution. On the other hand, historians of the early nineteenth century see salons at every turn, woven into the fabric of mondanité and political life. If salon culture persisted well beyond the 1780s, then we need to reexamine the conceptual foundations upon which scholars of the Enlightenment have pronounced its demise. This article suggests that we begin by viewing the salon in longue durée perspective as a social, cultural, and political institution shaped by the aristocracy's efforts to regulate and control the protracted transition from heredity to meritocracy in the composition and definition of elites. Est-ce que la culture des salons a cessé d'exister avant la Révolution française, ou est-ce que le salon a continué comme une institution importante au dix-neuvième siècle? D'une part, les théoricien féministes et les historiens de l'Ancien Régime ont construit une explication complexe du rôle central de la sociabilité des salons dans les pratiques culturelles du dix-huitième siècle, une explication que suppose néanmoins que la culture des salons disparöt quand les femmes furent exclues de l'espace public avant la Révolution. D'une autre part, les historiens du dix-neuvième siècle rencontrent des salons á tout instant, incorporés d'ailleurs dans la structure de la mondanité et la vie politique. Si la culture des salons a persisté au-déla des années 1780, il faut réexaminer les fondations conceptuelles sur laquelles les interprètes des Lumières ont prononcé le décès. Cet article propose qu'on commence en examinant le salon d'une perspective de longue durée comme une institution sociale, culturelle et politique façonnée par l'aristocratie pour régler et maîtriser la transition prolongée de la hérédité á la mérite dans la composition et la définition des élites.
