Abstract

This article attempts to reconstruct the career of the royal chamberlain Pierre de la Broce and aristocratic perceptions of his power in the court of King Philip III. Numerous sources permit an exploration of Pierre's relations with the nobility as well as the causes of his fall from power. These include chronicles, poems, and, especially, the chamberlain's personal archive, now in the National Archives.
