Considering MUSE’s 25-year run from two perspectives, a former director and current participating publisher salutes the staff’s deep experience and tireless enthusiasm.

“I have been privileged to see MUSE from two perspectives, as a director and now as a participating publisher. It’s clear to me that MUSE has been successful because of a staff that wants to innovate and expand and not rest on its laurels. There are many longtime staff who are still incredibly enthusiastic about their jobs. None of MUSE’s best qualities and achievements would have been sustained if it weren’t for the staff.

“During my tenure, we undertook a major website re-design, and I’m especially proud that we had the first meeting with publishers about adding books to MUSE. There were a lot of questions and some skepticism, but it was the start of that conversation and UPCC emerged shortly after and brought books to the platform.

“As director now at Temple University Press, I’ve enjoyed seeing MUSE from a client’s perspective. I know the context and back story, and I appreciate what’s been accomplished. It also allows me to ask more informed questions as a participating publisher.

“These conversations with the publishers who trust MUSE with their content have always been key. MUSE has been willing to learn from all the publishers, as well as from the library customers, and to balance the needs of the community. Those trust-building conversations with all of MUSE’s stakeholders have been incredibly important.

“I find it amazing to consider what MUSE has accomplished in 25 years, and I’m so proud of playing a small part in MUSE’s success.”
