JHU Libraries, dean from 1995 to 2001

As leader of the JHU Libraries at the time of MUSE’s launch, Jim Neal was part of the team that guided the transition from grant-funded initiative to viable publishing business model.

“We are all very proud that Project MUSE was an early and successful example of press/library collaboration. As an early digital initiative focused on humanities journals, it also set the framework for including other e-content, such as e-books.   There is much to admire in MUSE’s quality content, humanities focus, strong leadership, continuing innovation, affordability for libraries, and dependability of the service.

“There were a lot of questions in the early years, of course. Would libraries pay? Would scholars accept? Would the collaboration between the Library and the Press sustain? Would Project Muse make sense financially for the Press? The answers came with the instant enthusiasm in the library community, support from the scholarly societies, and the reassurance of a viable business plan and solid technology infrastructure. Looking back, and looking ahead—bravo!”
