Moreover, these political implications are bidirectional, as Latino/a religious beliefs and expressions can also influence Latino/a politics in various ways. This essay explores four different avenues in which political factors and the religious experiences of US Latinos/as can become intertwined. These include:(1) the role that general political climate and specific public policies can have in shaping the interactions between church hierarchies and Latinos/as;(2) the implications that specific political issues—such as the politics and law of immigration—can have on forms of Latino/a religious observance;(3) the influence of Latino/a religious beliefs on electoral politics; and (4) the role of religion in Latino/a grassroots political organizing. Each of these four dimensions is illustrated through a brief look at the religious experience of one of the major Latino ethnic/national subgroups, including Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cuban Americans, and Chicanos.
