Although the late Roman historian Jordanes supplies only meagre information on his own
life, some hints in his works can be used to reconstruct it with some degree of certainty. For
example, Jordanes should be understood in the context of Constantinople. The core of his
geographical knowledge lies in the Balkans. His claims of Gothic ancestry are questionable
and misleading. On the other hand, there are compelling reasons to link Jordanes with the
community of the Gothi minores in the late Roman province of Moesia secunda.
