Covering the period from 1770–2000, this collection examines the relationship between landscape and empire by way of a range of literary, historical, and visual matter. Bringing together the work of established as well as emerging scholars, it considers the connections between the mechanics of empire-building, and the way in which landscape was both viewed and imagined. Organised chronologically, the volume includes, among others, studies of late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Irish maps, travel accounts to the Cape, emigrant experiences in New Zealand, impressions of Jamaica and Dominica, and fictional interpretations of the Indian landscape.
