When one begins to reflect upon Bion’s radical revision of psychoanalytic theory, one usually cites such ideas as container/contained, attacks against links, L, H and K linkages between self and object, alpha function, transformations, emotional turbulence, catastrophic change, and group psychology inter alia. His conception of dreams and of dreaming itself has never been a subject of separate study, as far as I have been able to determine. Yet his ideas about dreams and dreaming constitute some of his most original and far-reaching innovations of psychoanalytic thinking. In this contribution I shall synopsise the epigenesis of Bion’s venture into dreams and dreaming and try to call attention to the unusual importance Bion assigns to them in regard to ‘learning from experience’.
