A glance at the history of the idea will show readers still better what pragmatism means. The word "pragmatism" spread, and at present it fairly spots the pages of the philosophic journals. Mr. Schiller gives to all the view of truth the name of "Humanism," but, for this doctrine too, the name of pragmatism seems fairly to be in the ascendant. He applies the analogy to beliefs, and proposes; the name of "Humanism" for the doctrine that to an unascertainable extent our truths are man-made products too. Mr. Schiller admits as emphatically as any one the presence of resisting factors in every actual experience of truth-making, of which the new-made special truth must take account, and with which it has perforce to "agree". To the genuine "Kantianer" Schiller will always be to Kant as a satyr to Hyperion.
