Abstract
One of his organizing concepts is a new formulation of career: a lifetime pursuit of satisfactions—physical and social. It is built upon an individual's contribution to the production, protection, and reproduction necessary for the community's continued existence, but it includes other valued activities. Careers evolve in various ways over the lifespan and so individual differentiation is characteristic of human communities.
