A Deeper Telling
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

In a voice made almost
entirely of breath, she asks
me, Tell me? My tongue
touches folds at the tip
of my palate, “o” drags
air from my throat.

If she were in my mouth,
she could say, Say a vowel,
to feel the arrangements I
was making, spoken in order
from front to back––bills,
penalties, documents, drives,
cash, lockout, nothing in ink.

This seems somehow a deeper
telling, disguised in an assembly
of acoustics and sound, divined
from me in an alternate tongue.
No is tactile, forceful, bold in
a way that yes is anything else.
