Mary Oliver

It doesn't have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don't try
to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.

Mary Oliver is the author of ten books of poetry, and is the recipient of the National Book Award, the Christopher Award, the L. L. Winship/PEN New England Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. Beacon Press recently released a new CD of Ms. Oliver's work entitled "Mary Oliver reads Mary Oliver," and she will be releasing a new book in the fall entitled Thirst.
