In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Attentive readers may recognize The Models’ Interval, the oil painting by Seán Keating that appears on the cover of this issue, for it appeared in monochrome in these pages in the Winter, 2011 issue (volume 15, number 4). There, the image accompanied Dr. Éimear O’Connor’s article on two New York City galleries that specialized in presenting Irish fine art, “America Called: The Helen Hackett Gallery and the Irish Art Rooms”; the painting was displayed in Patric Farrell’s Irish Art Rooms in 1932. At the time, Irish art was an almost unknown category in North America.

In Ireland, however, Keating (1889–1977) was already among the most well-known of artists: a full member of the Royal Hibernia Academy (for which he would later serve as president for more than a decade), an outspoken commentator on art and arts education in the new nation, and famous for his now-iconic paintings of the Irish War of Independence and for his oils depicting the Shannon hydroelectric scheme. The Models’ Interval (1928) presents less solemn subject matter, a casual “snapshot” of the artist’s principal models enjoying a short rest between intervals of sitting.

We thank the Keating Estate for kind permission to present this image. It is now held in a private collection. We are also grateful to Dr. O’Connor for having so generously assisted us in presenting this memorable work to our readers.
