My Mother Reads to Her Daughters: Great Expectations

From: The Missouri Review
Volume 36, Number 4, 2013
p. 56 | 10.1353/mis.2013.0110

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

AND if we found someone who loved us—stable
(with stables), velvet-suited (well-suited)—found

ourselves dressing for the altar, white pearl
buttons down our back, our skin rose-watered, lost

inside lace. BUT we didn’t keep him, dropped
him as girls are always dropping doll shoes, found

only when the dolls are gone. IF we put him somewhere
safe but then forgot—cherry-red barrettes lost

in a lunchbox. If we let him forget us. If we
didn’t dazzle in handmade dresses, coats found

at thrift stores. If we didn’t roll with the punches.
IF we stood there in the aisle: lace-stunned, lost

as a child in a snowstorm. Those unforgiving flowers,
ice-white, cake-white, white so thick we only found

our way by turning, running: all those faces watching
our religion raveling. WE’D wear only the lost

shreds of our beauty. We’d sit cordoned in the dust-
caked banquet; curtained so no sun could find

our faces. We would frighten whoever found
us there between the pages of old heartbreak—
moldering, never married to anything but loss.
