Dada, Surrealism, Antropofagia: The Consuming Process of the Avant-gardes

From: L'Esprit Créateur
Volume 53, Number 3, Fall 2013
pp. 79-90 | 10.1353/esp.2013.0031

This article shows how cannibalism links symbolically and aesthetically the famous European-centered Dada and Surrealism movements and the lesser known Brazilian Antropofagia movement. Via manifestos and creations such as collages, these three avant-gardes indeed consume and devour each other, turning innovation into tradition, and the new into the old, before renewing it.
