Abstract

Abstract:

A symposium, held at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in October 2009, marked the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Quentin Skinner's essay "Meaning and Understanding in the History of Ideas." Four scholars, Melissa Lane, Bryan Garsten, Nadia Urbinati, and Philip Pettit, presented appraisals of Skinner's work. In his "Reply to My Critics" Skinner addresses the papers of each of the four scholars.
