Cape Fear Confederates: The 18th North Carolina Regiment in the Civil War. James Gillispie. Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 2012. ISBN 978-0-7864-4847-0, 248 pp., paper, $35.00.

Civil War buffs may immediately recognize the 18th North Carolina as the regiment that accidentally shot Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson while he rode along the lines at Chancellorsville, Virginia. In this solid new regimental history, James Gillispie examines the history of the regiment, from formation through their final campaigns. He highlights the regiment’s performance during the Seven Days, at Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the tough fighting during the Overland campaign of 1864. The volume concludes with two helpful appendixes that provide biographical sketches of some of the members of the regiment, as a well as a list of those who surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865.

General Abner M. Perrin, C.S.A.: A Biography. Ron V. Killian. Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 2012. ISBN 978-0-7864-6980-2, 233 pp., paper, $29.95.

This new biography explores the military career of Gen. Abner M. Perrin, who led the 14th South Carolina during the Civil War. Perrin participated in many significant battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania, where he was mortally wounded. This new biography, filled with maps, offers a thorough and detailed examination of the life of a brigadier general unfamiliar to many Civil War historians.
