you are often waiting for me when i awake i can’t help but wonder if you watch me in my sleep judging, no weighing my heart assessing my worthiness knowing how easily i can let go and walk away if it don’t feel right

i have spent whole days trying to understand you trying to find the right words to carve into what i’m suppose to say and you know how quickly i’ll abandon anything that sounds phony forced or too rehearsed

i think it’s wise to keep me at arms length to come to me only when you’re ready and trust me to commit because heaven knows i can marry a thousand times but i can’t divorce my poems [End Page 13]

Frank X Walker coined the term, “Affrilachian” to refer to Appalachian African-Americans and founded Pluck! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts and Culture. He is the author of five poetry collections and serves the University of Kentucky as an Associate Professor in the Department of English and the Director of the African American and African Studies Program.
