136 APCG DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD, 1991 The Association’s Distinguished Service Awards were initiated in 1983. Selection is based on accumulative contributions to the organization including service in elective offices, responsibility for the Yearbook or newsletter, participa tion in annual meetings, service on committees, and general support for the Association. In 1991 one Distinguished Service Award was presented on the recommenda tion of the Committee on Awards and Prizes (Peter Eilers, Raymond Hatton, Elizabeth Bums) at the 54th annual meeting of the Association at Tucson in September. The award was made at the banquet to William G. Loy. WILLIAM G. LOY, Professorof Geography, University ofOregon, has been associated with the APCG for nearly 25 years. He served as Vice-President (1987) and President (1988). Bill has been a major figure in cartography for many years, and his presidential address, “Geographic Names in Geography,” called for more instruction in geographic names studies, especially in conjunction with GNIS and GIS activities. Bill has served on many committees, presented numerous papers, and introduced many students to the Association. His valuable contributions to this organization and to the profession are appreciated. ...
