The program will also include a plenary speech by the 2012 Wolff lecturer, Margaret Beetham, as well as a presentation by Joel Wiener, winner of the 2012 Robert and Vineta Colby Scholarly Book Prize. Curran Fellowship for Research on the Victorian Press

Curran Fellowship awards are made possible through the generosity of pioneering scholar Eileen Curran. These annual grants are intended to aid scholars studying nineteenth-century British magazines and newspapers in making use of primary print and archival sources.

The Curran Fellowship is awarded annually in the form of two grants of $2,500 each. The deadline for the fifth annual Curran Fellowship competition is October 15, 2012. The projected research may involve study of the periodical press in any of its manifold forms and may range from within [End Page 249] Britain itself to the many countries within and outside of the empire where British magazines and newspapers were bought, sold, and read during the long nineteenth century (ca. 1780-1914).

Applications for the Curran Fellowship for research to be undertaken in 2013 must be submitted in electronic form and sent to curranfellowship@ rs4vp.org. Applicants should send a CV, the names and contact information of two scholars who are familiar with the applicant and his or her research goals, and a description of the project to which these funds would be applied. Any queries about the application may be sent to the same address.

Applicants will be notified by January 15, 2013. Successful applicants will be required to submit a brief report describing the results of their research to RSVP at the conclusion of the funded portion of their project and are asked to acknowledge the fellowship in any published work based on that research.

The full call for applications may be found on the RSVP website at http://www.rs4vp.org/prizes.html.

A set of additional guidelines for applicants may be found at http://www.rs4vp.org/curran_fellowship_guidelines.pdf.

Robert and Vineta Colby Scholarly Book Prize

This year's Colby Book Prize was awarded to Joel Wiener for his book, The Americanization of the British Press, 1830s-1914 (Palgrave, 2011).

Many congratulations to Joel, a founding member of RSVP and a pioneering student of the Victorian press, on this splendid achievement.

The Colby Book Prize was endowed in 2006 in memory of Robert Colby by his wife, Vineta Colby, also a distinguished scholar and longtime member of RSVP. In 2011, following Vineta's death, the Board of Directors of RSVP unanimously voted to re-name the prize to honor both Robert and Vineta Colby for their many fine contributions to the study of Victorian periodicals

The annual prize is given to the book published during the preceding year which made the most significant contribution to the study of nineteenth-century periodicals. The winner receives a monetary award of up to $2,000 and is invited to speak at the RSVP conference. The 2012 call for nominations will be announced later this year. [End Page 250]
