Prefatory Note The genesis of this special issue of University of Toronto Quarterly was >A Visionary Tradition: Canadian Literature and Culture at the Turn of the Millennium=, a conference held in Guelph, Ontario, November 10-15, 1999, organized by J.R. (Tim) Struthers of the University of Guelph. The original versions of the essays by John Ayre, William Butt, Stan Dragland, Thomas M.F. Gerry, and James Reaney were prepared for that conference; all have since been revised for this publication.
