In this paper I try to understand why Angus Kerr-Lawson and John Lachs, two of the most relevant readers of George/Jorge Santayana, disagree about his ontological concerns. The main topic deals with the meaning Santayana gave to "matter" and "substance." As a new Hermes, I invoke Lucretius and Aristotle to iluminate this discussion.
