Abstract

One important issue in Anglo-American philosophy of religion during the last half-century concerns whether religious language is intelligible—that is, cognitively meaningful. While many have regarded the debate over intelligibility as problematic, the current status of the issue may not be clear. In this paper I review some of the history of this philosophical debate and present the recent discussion, including some discussion in theology on this question. I also propose how one might defend the intelligibility of religious language.
