Abstract

This essay considers the theme of forgetfulness in connection with the losing presidential candidate, Mitt Romney. It was written in two parts and at two distinct moments – the months before and the days following the 2012 Presidential election. Though Americans are now in the merciful position of being able to forget Mitt Romney after so many years of watching him try to become President, I propose that we linger for another moment on his defeat. ‘Romnesia’ becomes an occasion for reflection on the forms of mendacity and memory-loss that permeate our political culture.
