  • Choreographies of Protest
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Demonstrations -- United States.
    • Body, Human -- Symbolic aspects.
    Abstract:
This essay reconstructs nonviolent protest during three moments in recent US history—the lunch counter sit-ins of 1960, the ACT-UP die-ins of the late 1980s, and the Seattle WTO protests in 1999, asking of them the kinds of questions that a dance scholar might pose. By showing how bodies make articulate choices based on their intelligent assessment of other bodies, the essay frames a new perspective on individual agency and collective action.
    Giersdorf, Jens Richard.
  • Border Crossings and Intra-National Trespasses: East German Bodies in Sasha Waltz's and Jo Fabian's Choreographies
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Waltz, Sasha. Allee der Kosmonauten [performance]
    • Fabian, Jo. Pax Germania [performance]
    • Dance -- Political aspects -- Germany.
    Abstract:
Even though Jo Fabian and Sasha Waltz each base one of their dance theatre pieces on East German identity during and after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989, their distinct approaches and trainings produce dramatically different choreographies. By examining the dialectical relationships of their productions with East German citizens' conscious pedestrian movements at that time, I illuminate the role of choreography in the creation of societal structures.
    Kraut, Anthea.
  • Between Primitivism and Diaspora: The Dance Performances of Josephine Baker, Zora Neale Hurston, and Katherine Dunham
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Baker, Josephine, 1906-1975 -- Criticism and interpretation.
    • Hurston, Zora Neale -- Contributions in dance.
    • Dunham, Katherine -- Criticism and interpretation.
    • African American dance.
    Abstract:
This article situates Hurston's largely neglected theatrical presentations of West Indian folk dance alongside the better-known dance work of Baker and Dunham in order to trace shifts in the racialized meanings surrounding black vernacular dance stagings in the early decades of the twentieth century. A comparative survey of the three artists exposes an important if complicated historical transition from stereotypical representations of black primitivity to more nuanced representations of a black diaspora.
    Chatterjea, Ananya.
  • Subversive Dancing: The Interventions in Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's Batty Moves
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Zollar, Jawole Willa Jo. Batty moves [performance]
    • African American dance.
    Abstract:
This essay analyzes the movement vocabulary and choreographic structure of Batty Moves, a piece created by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and performed by her company, Urban Bush Women, in order to suggest how the dancing bodies here comment on history and rewrite current cultural stereotypes. It focuses specifically on how the dancers, manipulating typical movement phrases from ballet, modern dance, and African-based movement, negotiate an aesthetic-cultural framework that critiques the fetishization of the black female body while enabling reclamations of black female sexuality.
    Ley, Graham.
  • Modern Visions of Greek Tragic Dancing
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Dance -- Greece.
    • Drama -- Chorus (Greek drama)
    Abstract:
Dancing must be an integral part of our understanding of Greek tragedy as a form of dance drama, but its reconstruction is obscure. The methodology of significant proposals made in the modern period by researchers Lawler, Webster, and Prud-hommeau is placed under critical scrutiny in this essay, with important ancient terms examined, and a broad problematic exposed.
    Milhous, Judith.
  • The Economics of Theatrical Dance in Eighteenth-Century London
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Dance -- Economic aspects -- England -- London -- History -- 18th century.
    • Theater -- Economic aspects -- England -- London -- History -- 18th century.
    Abstract:
What did dance cost eighteenth-century London theatre and opera companies? This survey of account books and other financial records uses percentages to obtain comparisons among disparate sources. As the art became increasingly specialized, the amount allotted to dancers fluctuated, but grew as high as 25 to 55 percent of salaries. Although outspent by the opera, the theatres continued to compete as best as they could. The substantial appeal of dance must be reckoned in any account of this period.
