Fellowship Announcement

The Bill and Rita Clements Research Fellowships for the Study of Southwestern America for 2005-2006

The William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies welcomes applications for two full-year and one single-semester residential research fellowships. Full-year fellowships carry a stipend of $37,000, health benefits, a $1,500 allowance for research and travel expenses, and a publication subvention. Single-semester fellowships will receive an $18,500 stipend, a $750 research allowance, and a publication subvention. Individuals in any field in the humanities or social sciences doing research on Southwestern America are invited to apply. The fellowships are designed to provide time for senior or junior scholars to bring book-length manuscripts to completion. Application deadline is January 10, 2005. Travel Grant

The Clements Center-DeGolyer Library Research Travel Grants

The William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies offers $500 a week research-travel grants for up to four weeks to applicants who live outside the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area to encourage a broader and more intensive use of the special collections at the DeGolyer Library (www.smu.edu/cul/degolyer). The library consists of over 90,000 volumes or rare and scholarly works, 350,000 photographs, and approximately 40,000 linear feet of archival materials pertaining to the trans-Mississippi West, the Spanish Borderlands, and the history of transportation, especially railroads worldwide. Special collections include Stanley Marcus, Horton Foote, Texas Banknotes, Map Collections, Women's Archives of the Southwest, Petroleum in the West, Photography of the West and the J.C. Penny & Co. Book Prize

The William P. Clements Prize for the Best Non-Fiction Book on Southwestern America

The William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies offers the William P. Clements Prize for the Best Non-Fiction Book on Southwestern America. The $2,500 prize promotes and recognizes fine writing and original research on the American Southwest. Including the prize, the author will receive an invitation to give the annual Clements Prize Lecture at Southern Methodist University, expenses to be paid by the Clements Center. The competition is open to any non-fiction book, including biography, on any aspect of Southwestern life, past or present, with a 2004 copyright.
