  • Intelligent Uses of Engineering and the Legitimacy of State Power
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Engineering and state.
    • Power (Social sciences)
    • Legitimacy of governments.
    Abstract:
The destruction of the World Trade Center on 9/11 not only brought terrorism to the forefront of politics, but also made visible the political significance of engineering. The targeting of a skyscraper and use of commercial airplanes for the attack were frightening because they displayed not just political rage, but an unexpected intelligence. Osama Bin Laden raised the scary specter of a terrorist engineer. Scholars in Science and Technology Studies have argued before that hybrids and built environments could be tools of power, but the significance of these analyses became newly evident on 9/11.

  • A Modernization of "Peerless Homogeneity": The Creation of Russian Smokeless Gunpowder
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Mendeleyev, Dmitry Ivanovich, 1834-1907.
    • Russia -- Armed Forces -- History -- 19th century.
    • Gunpowder -- History.
    Abstract:
Past studies of technical choice in military modernization have tended to assume both a unitary view of "technological determinism" and a concept of "modernization" in the singular. Using the case of chemist D. I. Mendeleev's development of a Russian variant of smokeless gunpowder in the 1890s, this article argues for a vision of late-imperial Russia as a site where several different modernizations confronted each other, a debate that was framed in Russian military circles in terms of the value of technical change in the first place. The eventual rejection of Mendeleev's pyrocollodion thus serves as an episode in the history of technological determinism as a category.

  • Blacktop: How Asphalt Paving Came to the Urban United States
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Asphalt cement -- History.
    • Highway engineering -- United States -- History.
    Abstract:
Asphalt was first used as a paving material in U.S. cities in the 1860s. Early applications were largely unsuccessful because its chemical composition was ill-understood and methods as well as machinery had to be developed to apply it with success. Competent chemists and increasingly experienced contractors gradually led to a mastery which by the early twentieth century made asphalt the commonest paving material, surfacing 90 percent of U.S.streets and highways. Nationwide contacting firms, the appearance of railroad mixing plants, and the invention of tank cars to distribute plentiful Western petroleum cheaply played a crucial role in the success of asphalt.

  • The "Freer Men" of Ham Radio: How a Technical Hobby Provided Social and Spatial Distance
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Amateur radio stations -- Social aspects -- United States -- History -- 20th century.
    • Men -- Recreation -- United States -- History -- 20th century.
    • Couples -- United States -- Social conditions -- 20th century.
    Abstract:
The hobby of amateur radio-communicating by wireless with individuals around the world-focused on technology. At the same time, however, it served important social functions in the lives of participants. This article analyzes hobbyists' rhetoric about family life and household space to document how men operating "ham" radios in mid-twentieth century America altered the social geography of middle-class homes. During a postwar period of sexual identity anxiety and when women controlled domestic environments, ham radio strengthened men's claims on masculinity and privacy. Amateur radio operators developed a distinct technical identity, based in personal identity and material culture, that allowed them to simultaneously achieve social and spatial distance.

    Subject Headings:
    • Hagley Museum and Library.
    • Technology -- History -- Archival resources.
    • Archival resources -- Delaware -- Wilmington.
    Abstract:
The Hagley Museum and Library has served as a center for research in the history of technology since the 1960s. Yet even scholars who have done extensive research at the library may be unaware of the breadth and diversity of its archival holdings. This essay introduces recent additions to the library's holdings and provides suggestions for further research in older archival collections. Emerging themes in the history of technology, such as the environment, internationalization, safety, users, and gender, frame the discussion.
