Preface OnekeynoteofthisvolumeofStudiesinEighteenth-CenturyCulture isstruckbytheCliffordLectureofRobertDarntonwithwhichitbegins: heresy.Manyoftheessayscollectedhereattackorreviseorthodoxiesold andnew,explicitorimplicit.BeginningwithDarnton'saudacious recharacterizationoftheFrenchrevolution,andconcludingwithPaul Alkon'sPresidentialAddressof1990,whichrequiresreformulationof "theeighteenthcentury"itself,ourcontributorsnotonlyproposenew materialforconsideration,butreconsiderationsofreceivedperspectives. Typically,theyderiveimpetusfromtheothercommonfeatureofthis diversecollectionofessays,trueandresponsibleinterdisciplinarity.
