In the fall of 1987 the Steinbeck Research Center (now the Center for Steinbeck Studies) at San José State University published the first issue of The Steinbeck Newsletter. Two issues per year or one combined issue were published annually. Included in the Newsletter have been articles by Steinbeck scholars and others, reviews of related books, articles, dramatic productions, conferences, and some bibliographic work. In the summer issue of 1990 Steinbeck specialist Lee Richard Hayman began his column "Again Please?" which corrects errors about Steinbeck appearing in various publications. The column "Steinbeck Today" started its run in the Summer 1993 issue which includes interesting news items, headlines and references to Steinbeck sent to the editor designed to keep readers informed of what is going on currently with respect to Steinbeck studies. News about the Center for Steinbeck Studies' collections and activities are contained in a "Notes from the Director" column in most issues. The Steinbeck Newsletter is replete with interesting illustrations and photographs, which enhance its appeal. Beginning with the 2001 Winter issue, Vol. 13, no. 1, the title changed to Steinbeck Studies. This new title should not be confused with a journal published by The John Steinbeck Society of Japan which bears the same title. With volume 15 (2004), Steinbeck Studies was greatly expanded and changed to a traditional 6" by 9" journal format.
