I am a woman “of an age,” no longer sleep soundly but inhabit darkness as well as day. I awaken periodically to monitor the movement of stars, take night’s temperature, offer the parched, sleeping world the water of murmured prayer.

So I am conversant with moons: the icy howl of the Wolf Moon, hushed blooming of the Grass Moon, Harvest Moon, ripe and red as apples.

But my trysting moon, moon of my restless heart, is blue-white, natal silence of the Long Night Moon whose distant, maternal face smiles on her frozen world, makes winter night luminescent and my darkness bright. [End Page 100]
