Dario Oleaga, an artist who arrived in Washington Heights from the Dominican Republic in 1994, was in the habit of photographing street shrines long before September 11. While suffering with his adopted city in the aftermath of that day, Oleaga noticed that "New York became a single altar." He responded by traveling with his camera to document these urban still-lifes, resonant with humanity in the grip of unspeakable loss. Oleaga created color FLEX PRINTS of these images in vertical formats of 64 x 48 inches and horizontal formats of 48 x 60 inches. His work has been shown internationally, and the image featured on our cover is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
