Wheeler In the past 10 years, geography has continued to expand in the 10-state Southeastern Division.1 Notable expansion has occurred at the University of Alabama; Appalachian State University; Florida Atlantic University; George Mason University; Georgia Southern University; University of Louisville; Mary Washington College; Middle Tennessee State University; the University ofNorth Carolina, Chapel Hill; and the University of South Carolina. The six largest departments in faculty size in 1995 - 1996 were the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (21), University of Georgia and University of South Carolina (20 each), Western Kentucky University (18), University of Kentucky (16), and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (15). Florida State University has just established a Ph.D. program in geography.
