Southeastern Geographer Vol. XXXI, No. 1, May 1991, pp. 52-53 REVIEW OF THE FORTY-FIFTH MEETING, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA Karl R. Raitz The Forty-Fifth Meeting ofthe Southeastern Division, Association of American Geographers, was held in Columbia, South Carolina, on November 18—20 at the Columbia Marriott Hotel. Meeting host was the Department of Geography, University of South Carolina, and the Local Arrangements Committee was chaired by Julian Minghi. The official registration count was 395, which was well above the attendance for recent meetings. The meeting program included three field trips; two scheduled special meetings; the ninth workshop on map libraries; the first World Geography Bowl competition; 61 papers organized into 15 sessions, including 13 papers presented by students in honors sessions; the Annual Business Meeting; and the Honors Luncheon. The meeting began with a special Sunday evening program, which included a Carolina barbeque dinner at the State Museum. Following the dinner, Mayor Bob Coble welcomed the group to the city and to South Carolina. Bob Janiskee chaired a session entitled "Hurricane Hugo: A Year Later." Jim Gandy, Chief Meteorologist, WIS-TV in Columbia ; H. Wayne Beam, Executive Director, South Carolina Coastal Council; and Fred Brinkman, Executive Director, South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, presented illustrated talks on the hurricane experience and responded to questions from the audience . The World Geography Bowl, organized by Neal Lineback of Appalachian State University, was an innovation for the annual meeting. The Bowl included student participants from each state in the Southeastern Division. After a series of elimination rounds on Sunday afternoon, the South Carolina team won the competition in the "Final Four" round on Monday evening. Charles F. Kovacik, President of the Southeastern Division, presided Dr. Raitz is Professor of Geography at the University of Kentucky in Lexington , KY 40506. He served as Vice President and Program Chairman of the Division during 1990. Vol. XXXI, No. 1 53 at the Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday morning. President Kovacik announced that Vernon Meentemeyer had been elected the new Vice President and J. Dennis Lord had been elected Secretary. Newly elected State Representatives were Kavita Pandit, Georgia; Tyrel Moore, North Carolina; Klaus J. Meyer-Arendt, Mississippi; Hsiang-te Kung, Tennessee; and Robert W Morrill, Virginia. Sally Horn, John Paul Jones, and Stephen Walsh were elected to the Honors Committee, as was Julian Minghi who will serve as chair-elect. John Florin will serve as chair of the Committee. Ary Lamme, Dennis Spetz, and Susan Brooker-Gross were elected to the Nominating Committee, with Brooker-Gross to serve as chair. The Forty-Fifth Meeting concluded on Tuesday afternoon with the Annual Honors Luncheon. Robert Lloyd, who chaired the Honors Committee , announced that Michelle Mills, Appalachian State University, had won the Merle C. Prunty Scholarship. The award for best paper at the Master's level went to Patricia Mahoney, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and at the Ph.D. level, to Yu Luo, University of Georgia. On behalf of the Southeastern Division, Lloyd presented the Outstanding Service Award and an Honorary Life Membership to Stephen S. Birdsall, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Susan Hanson, President of the Association of American Geographers, gave an address entitled "Time, Space, and the Occupational Segregation of Women" to conclude the luncheon and the meetings. ...
