OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AWARD James O. Wheeler University of Georgia James O. Wheeler has a long and distinguished record ofprofessional research in transportation, urban, and social geography. He has published more than 60 articles in refereed, scholarly periodicals, many of which are the leading journals of our discipline published in the United States and Europe. In addition, he has authored or co-authored five books, including a leading textbook in economic geography, and more than a score of book chapters and reviews. It is a partial measure of his dedication to research that while compiling this enviable publication record, he served as Head of the Department of Geography at the University of Georgia and in several key offices of the Southeastern Division , as Vice President and Program Chair, 1973—74, and as President of the Division, 1976—77. Jim Wheeler's scholarly accomplishments reach far beyond his published work, for he served as founding editor of Urban Geography in 1980 and has continued to guide its progress ever since. The success and impact of that journal reflect, in large part, his personal dedication and hard work. For his outstanding research contributions , he was named in 1987 the Merle C. Prunty Professor of Geography at the University of Georgia. Emerson wrote that "the house praises the carpenter." The edifice of productive research constructed by Jim Wheeler may provide praise enough, but the Honors Committee believes that this member of our division should also be awarded die Southeastern Division's Research Honors Award for his more than two decades of sustained, high-quality research activities in the field of geography . ...
