Southeastern Geographer Vol. XXXVI, No. 1, May 1996, p. 82 THE FIFTIETH MEETING: KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE Truman A. Hartshorn The program for the Knoxville meeting, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, offered the largest and most ambitious array of professional papers and ancillary activities sponsored by SEDAAG in recent memory. There were 102 papers submitted for the program. Three were rejected by the Program Committee. The remaining 99 papers were assigned to one of20 sessions. Four concurrent sessions were scheduled over six two-hour time blocks spanning one and one-half days, including Monday evening. Five of these sessions included the 27 papers submitted and accepted for the Graduate Honors competition. There also was one Gamma ThĂȘta Upsilon undergraduate paper session with six papers, making the student share of the program one-third of the total number of the paper presentations . The papers reflected the diversity and depth of geographic research in the country today. There were seven physical geography sessions, seven human geography sessions, three regional sessions, one session on the environment, and one GIS session. In addition, three panel sessions were organized to address current issues, including the status of women in geography and the National Geography Standards. The World Geography Bowl Competition brought over 100 students from throughout the region to compete and has become an important aspect of the program. The Opening Session featured a presentation on Appalachia by Wilma Dykeman, Tennessee State Historian. The Annual Business Meeting, Honors Luncheon, several committee meetings, and receptions rounded out the formal program.
