Arien Mack Editor’s Introduction THIS ISSUE ON INDIA IS PART OF OUR ONGOING SERIES DEVOTED to countries in transition. The series began in 1990 with issues about the transitions occurring in East and Central Europe following the collapse of communism. More recently, we have published issues that have explored transitions in South Africa and China. This volume on India, expertly guest edited by Arjun Appadurai, concerns the last of the major transitions yet to be explored. It is our hope that in the next several years it may be possible to organize an issue in this series on Egypt and Tunisia, but it is, of course, too soon to tell what will come from the momentous events of the last few months.
