With this volume, we happily celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Sign Language Studies. David Armstrong and James “Woody” Woodward, both long associated with the journal, have contributed pieces that look back and also show the impact that the journal has had during this forty-year period. Those pieces are followed by five articles on Saudi Arabian Sign Language (SASL), brand-new work that is exactly in the spirit of what Bill Stokoe had in mind. I think that he would see this volume as a fitting celebration of his vision. [End Page v]
