Abstract

How does a deaf individual develop the concept of self through social interaction and in dealing with standard English at school? Although it is an abstract and complicated question to investigate, I believe that developing a positive self-concept is crucial for one’s self-esteem and well being. A deaf person, I use some of my own personal experiences and observations to answer this question, relating these experiences to sociological, psychological, and educational views of deafness. I also discuss how standard English can be learned or achieved at school.
