To test the hypothesis that manual encoding aids learning in prelingually deaf persons, we tested 24 adults who use fingerspelling as their primary means of communication. Two groups of subjects participated in a paired-associate learning paradigm using eight study-test trial sequences. One group was prohibited from using manual encoding; the other group was told to use it. Those using fingerspelling showed more recall and a faster learning rate.
