Part 1 The University Gone Global

We make the University. Photograph by Ben Chaney. September 24, 2009: UC faculty members call for a system-wide walkout on the first day of instruction at most California campuses. Faculty, students, and staff gather in Sproul Plaza to join in protest against UC President Mark Yudof’s assumption of emergency powers during the previous summer. Under the aegis of a declaration of fiscal emergency, Yudof imposed mandatory furloughs for university employees and proposed fee increases for students. Involved members of the faculty demanded full budget transparency and that the administration not impose pay cuts or furloughs on employees with salaries below $40,000.
