Preternature: Critical and Historical Studies on the Preternatural

Vol. 1 (2012) through current issue

Preternature is an interdisciplinary forum for the study of the preternatural as seen in magics, witchcraft, spiritualism, occultism, prophecy, monstrophy, demonology, and folklore. The journal embraces a broad and dynamic definition of the preternatural, since the very categories of magic, religion, and science are open and active registers that the journal strives to explore, contextualize, and challenge.

Submission Guidelines

Preternature: Critical and Historical Studies in the Preternatural publishes scholarly articles, notes, and reviews covering all time periods and geographies, from a variety of academic approaches. As an English language publication, the Western tradition is inevitably an important focus, but the journal strongly encourages submissions covering cultural traditions worldwide.

Submission information

Preternature welcomes submissions on an ongoing basis that represent original scholarship in English on any topic relating to the role, appearance of, or function of the preternatural or closely related topics (magic, esotericism, demonology, the occult), from any academic discipline and theoretical approach. The journal especially welcomes original editions or translations of relevant texts from contemporary or ancient languages that have not yet appeared in scholarly edition or made available in English.

Contributions should be roughly 8,000-12,000 words (with the possibility of longer submissions in exceptional cases), including all documentation and critical apparatus. If accepted for publication, manuscripts will be required to adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (style 1, employing footnotes).

Preternature takes advantage of an online journal management system, through which contributors are encouraged to submit manuscripts for consideration. Please find us online at: http://www.preternature.org
