Abstract

The weakness of the print-based bibliographic instruction model is its focus on format of the information source over the type of information the source contains. Drawing from the critical literacy movement in the education literature, this article presents an example of a critical information literacy model as applied to the research paper component of a first-year composition course. In this model, students work from their own experiences as they are prepared to make predictive judgments about the information they will need.
