At the Restoration the English Church saw a clerical return to order which resulted in many moderates in the University of Cambridge being expelled from their places. The rational theology these 'Latitude-men' had developed during the Interregnum, principally against 'fanatics' and 'atheists', was now judged to be an inadequate defence of the Church by the returning loyalist clergy. Henry More (1614-87), one of the few 'Latitudemen' remaining in Cambridge, was singled out for attack as a 'heretic'. His apologetic response became a significant model for a younger generation of 'Latitude-men'.
