Ms. Stanislaus, 36, was formerly the director of the Bronx Museum of the Arts and before that was a curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem. She replaces Susan Vogel the founding director of the museum who is now at Yale University Gallery where she oversees a collection that is mostly made up of modernist artifacts by Picasso, Braque, Matisse, etc. Ms. Stanislaus received her masters in Art History from Columbia University in New York. She was also the curator of the much cited exhibition, "Contemporary African Artists: Changing Traditions" at the Studio Museum in 1990, which she took to the Venice Biennale, marking the first official appearance of contemporary African artists in that venue. Her appointment took effect February 13, 1995. Frank Herreman formally joins the museum on July I, 1995. O B I T U A R I E S The painter D E S M O N D FlADjOE, from Ghana, passed away after a brief illness in New York in November, 1994. Desmond was the director of SankofaVisual Arts Workshop which he co-founded with Helen Evans Ramsaran. Before migrating to the United States, he ran a similar workshop in Ghana with the renowned sculptor El Anatsui. Desmond left behind an impressive body of paintings and drawings. At Sankofa he organized public lectures and exhibitions on contemporary African art and artists. GANI O D O T U K U N one of the driving forces in contemporary Nigerian art died in an automobile accident in Nigeria in February, 1994. Gani, a highly respected painter with solid international reputation, was a professor of art at the influential art school of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He was also one of the founders of the influential art journal The Eye. His works are in many private and public collections in Africa, Europe, and the United States. SlNA Y U S S U F F , the artist who presided over the organization of the modern art collection at the National Museum of Modern Art in Lagos, Nigeria died in an automobile accident in Nigeria in December, 1994.
