Our covers in the year 2012 feature artists associated with the lively and influential Belfast Print Workshop, and more particularly, with the artists' responses to the urban environment. That response is vividly on display in "Building a City" by Karen Daye Hutchinson, a monoprint that measures 100 cm x 70 cm.

A native of Belfast, Hutchinson (b. 1965) graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Ulster before beginning her career as a full-time artist. She has shown in numerous exhibitions in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada, including the Titanic show at Belfast's Victoria Square in 2012. Her paintings and prints bespeak an ongoing fascination with habitat and architecture. "Building a City"—which the artist describes as "reflective of any city in the world" but also influenced by the current regeneration of Belfast—is one of a series of prints created in 2009. Though it employs some of the conventions of early architectural drawings before the invention of linear perspective, the print imparts the overall impression of an almost childlike delight in color, in the mode of a Chagall or Kandinsky painting. Readers may view more of Karen Daye Hutchinson's work in an extensive website found at http://karendaye-hutchinson.com/.

Located on Cotton Court in the Cathedral Quarter, the Belfast Print Workshop is the largest space in Northern Ireland for professional printmaking. It offers residencies, exhibitions, and courses for both the general public and for experienced printmakers. We thank the artist, as well as the staff of the Workshop and especially Alice Dixon, for kind assistance in providing this image. [End Page 42]
