SHAW IN THE HISPANIC WORLD: A BIBLIOGRAPHY' OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHIES CONCERNING George Bernard Shaw which have been so far compiled, none of them adequately reveals the attention which has been accorded his works in Spain and Latin America. As a result, the non-Spanish Shavian is left with the incorrect impression that the Irish dramatist is relatively unknown in the Hispanic world. The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature, for example, lists only two Spanish items on Shaw, and the two part bibliography of books and articles on Shaw from 1945 to 1955 compiled by Earl Farley and Marvin Carlson (in Alodern Drama, September and December 1959) contains only four items. More recent articles and studies on Shaw are chronicled in the annual bibliography of PMLA., but even there one only rarely finds the contributions of Spanish critics. The present bibliography gives a more accurate view. It reveals that many Hispanic men of letters have been interested in Shaw and that he has exercised a significant influence in Spain and Latin America. Although Hispanic literary criticism of Shaw may be less copious than that of some other countries, it is, nevertheless, extensive . Since early in the Twentieth century Shaw has been known by critics such as Jacinto Benavente, Jose Alsina, Ramon Perez de Ayala, and Pedro Henriquez Urena. His introduction in the Hispanic world may have been. relatively late and the performances of his plays less frequent than in other European countries and the United States, but he has been consistently admired and respected as a great dramatist and as a man of high pursuits and ideas. This bibliography, which includes items from 1903 to 1969 can be considered as a complement to the bibliography compiled by Mr. Farley and Mr. Carlson. GENERAL CRITICISM A. Spain Alsina, Jose.
