    Abstract:
This paper focuses on maroonage in the province of Pernambuco's plantation zone during Brazil's Independence era. The evidence indicates that the activities of maroons influenced the course of local politics. Masters frequently armed their slaves and involved them in local disputes for power. Slaves also participated alongside the free non-white population in urban uprisings often triggered by conflicts between local elites. At least on one occasion, urban "rabble" freed cap-tured maroons from the hands of authorities. For their part, maroons were aware of the vicissitudes of local politics because factional disputes influenced the forces of repression arrayed against them. The actions of maroons fueled elite fears that their nation could become a second Haiti where a successful slave revolt might topple Brazil's fledgling constitutional monarchy. The actions of maroons influenced the decisions of the local elites, pushing them to support the most conservative political option in those years, the formation of a highly centralized imperial monarchy with its capital in distant Rio de Janeiro. Scholars often credit the ubiquitious institution of slavery as a major factor that ultimately united elites from farflung provinces across Brazil under a single national government, unlike her Spanish American neighbors, and, based on the case of Pernambuco, this paper suggests that maroonage played an analogous but less commonly recognized role in shaping Brazil's unique political history in this period.

    Abstract:
This article presents a functionalist analysis of the discourse of the note written by Vilela in the story "A cartomante," by Machado de Assis. The note is interpreted and reinterpreted by Camilo several times in ways that are partially different. The effect of the re-readings, called "auto-pluriphonic," arises from the various foci of new information that Camilo derives from the discourse at each new reading or remembrance of the contents of the note. One of these interpretations conveys the possibility of the ironic-tragic end of Machado's text.

    Abstract:
The aim of this article is to reveal the existence of a dialogue between the romantic poetry of Gonçalves Dias, notably in his indianist poetry and the book Americanas (1875), by Machado de Assis. The article raises some questions about Machado's possible reasons for revisiting the indianist theme and shows Machado's admiration for Gonçalves Dias as evidenced in the poem "A Gonçalves Dias."

    Abstract:

    Abstract:

    Abstract:
This paper analyses the narrative process presented in José Saramago's A Jangada de Pedra as another possible discovery journey offered by the structure of the novel. By means of a careful process of self-referentiality, the narrator of the story leads the audience to reflect upon certain aspects of their own act of reading, thereby problematizing the very mechanisms involved in the production and reception of narratives as a whole. The impact of this novel therefore arises not only from its metadiscourse, but also from the constant movement of approximation and separation from the illusion, which is brought on once the process of endowing the text's indeterminacies with meaning begins. On this basis, the considerations presented here are two-fold: they constitute an attempt to explore the way Saramago makes use of fiction to investigate the operations involved in the concretization and appropriation of narrative constructions and how the reader concretizes and appropriates the "theoretical" message of the novel.
