Abstract

Riffaterre’s 1969 essay “La Métaphore filée dans la poésie surréaliste” to this day marks a paradigm shift in the analysis and understanding of Surrealist texts. I describe Riffaterre’s own “retroactive reading” of symbolist texts in the light of his work on Surrealism and contrast his theory of ekphrasis with claims made by André Breton.
